Yesterday...

Nate already posted about it over in his journal, but for those of you who don't read there... Alex had a happy little milestone yesterday. We frequently let him open our hands one finger and a time and we count up to five while he does it. Yesterday morning he did his own counting , saying "one - two - three" as he opened his fingers in order. We haven't got four and five down verbally, but still! I am a proud mommy.

Last night was Christmas celebrating over at my mom's house. First of all, I completely lost my mind and forgot to bring my insulin, so Nate had to go back to the house for it... ended up working out because Alex hadn't wanted to nap and so fell asleep in the car, and so the longer drive let him get some needed rest. Anyhow, it was us, my mom, her boyfriend Daniel (who is a bit of a chef and did a ton of work making yummy food for us all), my stepdad (and yeah, that's my mom's ex-husband... my family is crazy like that), Jay, and Morgan. It was really nice, tons of wonderful presents and food, and lots of fabulous (and wrong, because... my family) family stories. Jay was in charge of the stockings and remembered/bothered to get me sugar free stuff, which really made me happy.

Today was pretty wonderful as well. I haven't been out of my new sock monkey pjs all day. We actually woke up BEFORE Alex this morning and arranged all the presents under the tree (they'd previously been up-high-out-of-toddler-reach) for when he got up. Remembered to video/record the opening of gifts and stockings. Mike and Shannon had brought us bubble ring (traditional Christmas morning breakfast... it's little balls of pastry about the size of donut holes, covered in a cinnamon-y glaze, with maraschino cherries and I think pecans and maybe dried cranberries? Bunch o' yumminess but obviously not something I can have) and Alex wasn't too sure about it so mostly just sucked the glaze off some stuff and then left it alone. So far we haven't gone too crazy with the toys this year... he's gotten a lot of great clothes and cool movies, and a few toys that he really likes. Our major gift to him was of course his big-boy bed... it's shaped like a boat with a toybox in the bow, and it's got a slide out thing underneath which can be used either as a trundle bed or separated into drawers. Santa brought him some Pirates of the Caribbean (cartoon-y) bedding, and Nate and I spent a lot of time today getting his room cleaned up, the crib dismantled, and the new bed put up. He LOVES it, which is fantastic. I was pretty sure he'd at least like it, but he was excited about the building process, and then when he saw it all put together and made up with the sheets and everything? Yeah, he digs it like crazy. So that was really rewarding and joyful to see. Have a little bit of "my baby's growing up!" feeling, but mostly I'm just so happy with the little person he is (and continues to become), and so I can't really regret that he's growing up.

Nate also got the new TV set up (his major gift and reward for working so hard and getting a xmas bonus) and it's fantastic... so much nicer than the old giant monitor we had in there. The house is a bit of a disaster area with piles of cardboard and bulky styrofoam packing shapes, and the cats have decided to just stay outside while all the crazy furniture moving and construction was happening, but hey... it's Christmas. And Nate has tomorrow and Wednesday off of work, so we should be able to kinda get it back to normal. I also went through a lot of the clothes Alex has outgrown... Morgan's sister Amy has a little boy about 9 months old, and I thought she could maybe use some of the things Alex is too big for. So got that all sorted and boxed up for her, and am just waiting to find out what size shoes Sean is in right now, and then I'll take it all over for them. Probably tomorrow. Also go to get (more!! it's neverending) blood testing done tomorrow and then in the evening we're going out to have Christmas goodness with Nate's dad and Karen and Cassie & Mick. Cassie still hasn't gone into labor and has been ready to be done with it all for several weeks now... hopefully nothing too exciting will happen while we're there. Most first-time mothers go over their expected due date anyhow, so I'm not really surprised that she hasn't gone early.

La la la... I think that's everything. Hope everyone has had a wonderful holiday, and I wish you all the best.
