Checking in...

from Philadelphia. It's not all blizzard-y and cold like the last time we were here, but it still seems like such a dirty slummy city. I think the west coast has spoiled me. So mostly just staying in our hotel room.
Have some kind of cold/sinus issue (Alex has got it too, Nate is just about over it), and haven't exactly been getting much sleep lately so I begged off on going to see the Liberty bell and such when Nate and his coworkers went this morning. I wonder if I should have made myself go look at the landmarks, but really, it's not like I'm known for my love of history, and all I really wanted was for my head to stop hurting, my nose to clear up, and to get some rest.
There's a little place very close to the hotel which is like a street market inside a building. Very strange, but kind of neat too. Vendors selling raw/fresh ingredients, food vendors, flower stalls, misc shops... kinda crowded and loud but kinda neat. It's all in a big sort of open warehouse kind of space but divided into little alleys and paths by the sellers, so you wind up and down through all of it. So that was interesting.
The flight and all went pretty well. I think Alex would have liked to have been more active (5 hours on a plane when you're an almost-2-year-old gets boring) but he was well-behaved and we got several compliments after the flight from the people seated near us. So that's always nice. His sleep schedule (okay, all of our sleep schedules) is still a little whacked out from the time change and trying to nap/sleep in unfamiliar places, but he's doing okay.
Blah blah blah... I think that's all my news, kiddies. Hopefully the being sick thing will go away soon, for better enjoyment of visiting everyone next week.

Date: 2006-06-03 01:23 am (UTC)It's crazy how many restaurants have started making "chicken pot pies" without a bottom crust... just a layer of pastry over a kind of chicken stew/casserole. Crazy, I tell ya.
I didn't notice them at the market, and we ended up getting lunch at a creperie. Mmm, crepes...

Date: 2006-06-03 04:42 pm (UTC)Rita's Water Ice. Exactly what kind of ice do you normally make without water? For a long time we though oh, it's just like a normal italian ice that's not impressive at all. Then someone told us to get the gelati which is alternating layers of the italian ice with frozen custard. So good.
The last weird PA food I've encountered is apple dumplings. This is a peeled cored apple wrapped up in pie crust pastry stuff. Whole apple. We tried it at first and had no idea why they appeared so popular that they were sold everywhere. Once again, someone who grew up in PA revealed to us the secret - you're supposed to bake it in this syrupy sugar sauce thingee. After that it's soooo good. Especially with some milk or ice cream added.

Date: 2006-06-03 01:28 am (UTC)Yeah, I normally don't mind planes, but the pressure changes were kinda oogy with the sinus yuckiness. Hopefully should be gone by the time we fly back.

I don't even have to say anything else, just the description of what it is... seriously, now. I mean, if you ordered apple pie and they brought you apple pie filling with NOODLES in it and NO CRUST... you see what I mean?
But otherwise the food is fine :)
As to meeting up... we're pretty flexible too, but I want to make sure we see you while we're out here, so we should pick something. Wednesday?
