I love the early part of the holidays. People are usually extra nice to me now that I have an adorable little boy attached to my hip, but they are especially so during this time of year. Friendly and helpful and just brimming with a contagious kind of happiness and wanting to be good to fellow man. Unlike the end of the holidays when they are tired and hurried and not nearly as pleasant. So I've just been enjoying the crispness of the air, and the bits of color that are Californian late-autumn, and the way that nearly everyone I meet is happy and nice.

Thanksgiving turned out rather well, in a very homey comfortable way. Things weren't perfect - my cheesecake failed to meet my usual high standards, my mom was late, and we nearly forgot to make the stuffing, but for some reason, none of it bothered me. The turkey was beautifully golden and perfect, Jay and Morgan were both able to make it, and Jay was actually pretty friendly and well behaved (holidays don't bring out his best side, usually). We went ahead and started without my mom, and continued when she arrived, and I don't know - it was just a really nice evening. Nate's been insanely helpful around the house, with cleaning and even sneaking in some of the cooking. Alexander's begun sleeping through until 6ish most nights which is an incredibly nice thing too. My mom insisted on taking the pumpkin cheesecake to her work so I didn't throw it out, and I'll probably make a better one sometime soon (I was trying to eliminate some of the air, which worked, but I didn't get the silky smooth texture I usually achieve).

Tomorrow we'll be going down to visit Nate's family. Many people are here from out of town/state for the holiday, and we'd like to see them - unfortunately we'd already made plans and invited people to our house for Thanksgiving before we learned about the get-together, but we'll be able to see most of them tomorrow. We've also got the annual Littlefield ornament exchange penciled in on the calendar (yay!) and tentative plans to get together with Tom & Leslay. I want to try making a baked brie with little toasted baguette slices - we had a lovely one the last time we were at the Rock House, with a cranberry relish, and I think they'd appreciate it if I am able to duplicate it. There's also a tea-smoked duck breast with lavendar that I've been dying to make (can you tell the season brings out my show-offy kitchen wench persona even more than usual?) so it might be an adventuresome meal. ::loves holiday gettogethers::
