Just what the doctor ordered.....
Aug. 17th, 2003 11:10 pmA Fabulous Day with Leslay... I feel so much more balanced and happy. Part of it is being a bit more productive since my last post but part of it... I don't know. She's a perfect companion, in that she brings out the best in you and you notice who you are, and that who you are is a fantastic, gifted, funny, etc. individual. She is a Good Influence, and a hell of a fun person on top of it.
Heh, well Good Influence in all areas except food.... ohhhh she makes me so naughty.
We've had a date set for fondue decadence at the beach... unfortunately Tom got a cold, and so we decided to turn it into a living room picnic fondue instead, rather than leaving him out. Leslay has a very European and worldly outlook, so when it comes to food, it is the *good* stuff, not the cheap American knockoffs. Good French cheese with a hint of white wine, garlic, and herbs in the fondue pot, forks poised in indecision over a great fresh baguette from a local French bakery, a gorgeous round olive oil and rosemary infused bread (she said she was inspired in the bakery, trying to decide what I would love most - we both have similar weaknesses), broccoli florets, and chopped red, orange, and yellow peppers. Also to complement the breads, a tray of garlic-herb goat cheese and a peppery something goat cheese, and lovely cafe style beverages.
Not long ago, Leslay had gotten a bit depressed about the house-hunting... not being able to find anything like what she was looking for within her range and requirements... Nate sent her a few links to places to cheer her up and give her hope, since we remember all too well the frustration of looking at hideous tiny houses in bad neighborhoods for more than we could afford. Well, they looked at it, fell in love, and got it! Their offer's been accepted and they're just waiting for escrow to finish up. She's so excited... wanting to pack already, even though she knows it's silly, talking about plans for the garden, a bigger darkroom space in the basement suite, etc.... reminds me so much of how I felt when we found out we were getting our place. Talked alot about what we've done and the adventures we've had since becoming homeowners... entertained them and convinced them to call us for advice so they don't make our mistakes ;) We're hoping to get a chance to see the place soon, want to help them move in but we have some plans coming up that we'll not be cancelling, so it really depends on when things close for them.
Left Tom to get a little nap while we walked away some of the cheese and walked up to the beach... no tiny crabs, but nice weather and plenty of birds (the beach is just adjacent to a bird sanctuary) and not too crowded. Picked up some Grand Marnier on the way home, and spiked the dessert fondue... good bittersweet Ghirardelli chocolate, which was a heavenly envelope around bites of lemon cake, canteloupe, banana chunks, strawberries, and fuji apples. This is still lunch, mind. Oh, and in the cutest 1920's building with bavarian accents, gothic arches and iron scrollwork, oh and the arched wooden and iron doors! I could die. Much much chattering into the night and we eventually decided that we could bear to eat dinner... Left poor Tom home hopped up on cold medicine and looking forward to minestrone, and we walked up to a really cute place with an outdoor seating area which we got all to ourselves. Breaded artichoke hearts, caesar salad with jumbo scampi prawns to share with Leslay, and a wee slice of cappuccino mousse cake to give everyone bites of. Nate and Leslay both got nice pasta dishes, but I was still pretty satiated and didn't finish the salad even.
Spent almost the entire day with them, and never a dull moment... the hours flew by for all of us. They're so right in our life, similar to us in all our loving, silly, teasing ways. Got some good leads on high-end digicams from Tom, which I intend to follow up, and god... I just feel, so so so much better than I did last week. Agreed we must all get together again soon, although with moving and such their schedule may get crazy.
Rode home with happy tummies, yummy leftovers, and singing soft duets of songs we both love. I haven't felt so complete, so happy and grateful, thankful, in a while. I am so lucky to have Nate, and great friends, and my family close to me - tonight more than ever I appreciate how lucky I am.
