Something ate all my poor pond fishes. This is not a happy thing. I will be taking advantage of it to do a major cleanup/cleanout of the pond and then I do want to restock it. The danger of replacing fish, of course, is that if the predator is hanging around, it quickly learns that the buffet is restocked and will keep returning for easy meals. We do need *something* in there however, just so it doesn't become a breeding ground for mosquitos. I think I'll clean it up, and wait as long as I can, then introduce one feeder goldfish or some such. If it lasts awhile, I will restock pretty fish. If it disappears, I will add the tiny drab mosquito fish - they are too small, quick, and hard to see for a bird or racoon to bother with I think. Plus they hide. :( But I hope I can have friendly ornamental fishies again.

Date: 2004-04-28 03:32 pm (UTC)Top suspects are white herons - notorious for visiting ponds and eating fish, but usually around in the daytime and I haven't seen one anywhere near our house - and raccoons. Haven't seen any raccoons around either, but they can be sneaky. Could be some other kind of bird/animal too. No sightings and no evidence, so it's hard to say.
