Let's try that again....
Jul. 21st, 2003 09:20 amBday goodness!
For review: Two of the girls in Nate's family have birthdays very close to mine. We decided many years ago that it would make more sense and be more fun to celebrate together, and we've been doing that ever since. Since it's a family deal, sometimes I end up with two parties, that way I can also celebrate with my friends.
So, Saturday morning I am up and making party food. Then it's pack up the food and presents and miscellaneous items and head out to Modesto. We're the first to arrive, so we just spend some time chatting with Nate's dad and bday girl #2, Cassie. The family-residing-in-Texas sent us roses which was really sweet :) They are looking lovely on my desk at the moment.
The next bunch arrive, Bob & Melanie, bday girl #3 Trudi, and her friend Helena. They are starving, and so we start putting food out, which there is plenty of... someone mentions starting the hot dogs and such and I politely point out (a few times) that not all the guests (read: my family) have arrived, and so it would be better to eat the snacky stuff until they do. They start things anyway. I'm still a little hurt by this... they are the kind of people that would never dream of having dinner if someone wasn't there, let alone a birthday dinner... but somehow it's okay because they're just MY guests :( I would be more understanding if there wasn't a ton of food out for them. But anyway, it was the one bad spot in an otherwise lovely day, and thankfully my family arrived just as the food finished cooking, so they were able to be there.
Family-residing-in-Texas were called so that the wee ones could sing us "happy birthday", which is always cute :) More socializing and then the opening of presents... woohoo! I love gifts. Nate played Birthday Santa and passed out the gifts.
I got...
- From Jay and Morgan: a beautiful hanging lantern set. Black metal with glass lanterns that are suspended by a shepherd's hook... trying to decide where I want to put them.
- From my mom and Dave: two Koontz books: By the Light of the Moon; and The Face. Also a wheelbarrow (which I've been doing without - it will come in very handy) and a really good digital bathroom scale. Whee! Tomorrow I'll have my weigh-in at WW and I'll be able to see how close it matches up, but it seems pretty accurate. Yay!
- From Karl: A very nice glass cake stand with dome. I also have a bit of money left over to pick out another something kitchenish... must decide what I want.
- From Cassie: another copy of The Face (it was a popular gift)
- From Trudi: another copy of The Face (see what I mean?) and a Pilates dvd set.
- From Bob & Melanie: a $25 gift certificate to Bed, Bath, & Beyond (eeeeeee I love it) and several of the mesh dome things to put over food for when we have outdoor dining.
I feel very spoiled so far :) and I do have the receipts to exchange the duplicate books... hooray for good taste in gifts, but I really don't need three copies :)
Then card playing (didn't finish playing due to the hour but Nate & I were winning) and strawberry shortcake (with candles for us girls) and a quick trip home to my bed and cutiepie kitties.
Then yesterday, we went down to see Katlyn... took my rounds of wire and we made some nice frames... not as intricate or as big as the first try, I think they will turn out nicely.... then went to WalMart and JoAnn's to find the perfect wing-finishing materials... since *of course* July means all the autumn stuff is out, I fell in love with the colors of autumn leaves and decided to go with that color scheme. Got leaves for accent and gold glitter paint for veining and gold spray glitter for... well, everything really! It's spray glitter! Then I discovered that Katlyn is like a gorgeous fabric divining rod... we both got some truly lovely things for costumes. I would describe but words can't do justice to fabric and besides, there must be some suspense, no?
We were getting hungry and it was just about time for John to get off work (conveniently near where we wanted to eat) so we swung by to say hello and let him know, and Nate was able to get the new case for his cell phone (the previous one had a bad habit of letting the cellphone detach whether you wanted it to or not, leading to much aggravation) and then we headed over to Marie Callendar's, where I was not exactly diet-conscious... but I could have been worse.
