I get all jazzed when the old guy across the street waves to me when I'm outside.
My last nieghborhood was all State Parks or CHP people, so we all knew each other really well and did cookie exchanges at Christmas and silly stuff like that. Which was nice until I got my promotion and one of the guys I worked with (who also lived across the street from me) threw a shit fit and started glaring at me every time I came home from work.
I've lived in the same neighborhood all my conscious life and am always waving and saying hello to people up and down the street. We pick up each other's vacation mail and newspapers, look out for left on headlights and open garage doors at night and bring food and comfort when a loved one passes on. There was a time when we thought of moving out when there were alot of rentals on the street, but I'm glad we waited it out and are now in a multi-generational, family oriented renaissance. Welcome to Livermore!
