Catching up...

Yeah, I've been kind of quiet lately, and a lot has happened. Let me try to wrap it all up...
Day-after-Christmas: Spent this with Nate's family. I hate to be grinchy, but most of the gifts from them this year were very strange... like the kind of thing where you want to tilt your head at them and ask "Do you even KNOW us?" but of course, you're polite and don't do that, because it would just cause major family drama. So... lots of stuff that we didn't need. I *did* get a little hand/wand style blender which was on my list, so that was happy. And spending time with them was good. Alex fell asleep just as we arrived, so he got to open up his gifts later than the rest of us, and he did okay. Crazy blood sugar and timing made dinner a little odd for me, but I was pleased that Karen had gone to the trouble of making me a diabetic friendly dessert (It was also Mick's bday, so most people were having cake).
Week after Christmas: Because of our difficult news on the 27th, this was mostly a lot of couple time for me and Nate, which was really what we needed most. My mom took Alex for a couple days and we just watched silly movies and had crying jags and put away the holiday decorations, etc. Don't remember much else. New Years Eve was fairly low-key... stayed up and watched the TV countdowns a bit, and toasted with sugar-free fake apple cider >:P Bleh. It's not Martinelli's. But, enh. No biggie.
Was supposed to meet with my diabetes counselor and dietician on the 3rd, but there's insurance glitchiness because the original referral was for gestational diabetes, so they had me go see my general practitioner for a new (type II diabetes) referral so that I wouldn't get stuck with a very large bill. Ha, I don't actually have a regular doctor because I'm bad at going for annual checkups (how I was raised) and there hasn't been anything wrong with me to see a doctor about until now. But I got in the system and had an apptment and I completely hate my new doctor. I started out just being irked but the more I think about it, the more I think I'm going to switch to another dr. The big thing right now is that I still don't have a referral. I do go to see my (fabulous and wonderful) ob/gyn next week, so I'm just going to see if she can give me a referral. If not, I guess it's doctor shopping for me. Until then, I'm kind of faking my way through taking care of my diabetes (not thrilled with that, btw). I have my new non-pregnancy guidelines and am gradually decreasing my insulin to try to get into the right ranges. Right now, still generally being hypoglycemic or on the border of. Sigh. But I'll get there eventually. And hey, I got a free travel bug (a geocaching toy) for having this horrible disease. Yay free gifts! ::tries to be positive:::
Nate did some horse trading and got me a Treo! This is fantastic as I've been quite admiring of his but couldn't possibly justify how much they actually COST. But so now my cell phone has games and internet access and a diabetes management program and all kinds of nifty stuff. Alas, I can no longer use Leo, my little lion cell phone cover. I have a cover, but it's black faux alligator hide. :P Ugh. But it fits the phone. I have plans to get some cute fabric to cover up the alligator with. I kind of want to make myself a purse too, but keep trying to resist, reminding myself that I don't need more projects and that I don't know if my skills are up to something that complicated anyhow. Need to make some appropriately pirate-y curtains for the boy's room too, since the current Winnie the Pooh ones don't exactly match his new bed & bedding.
Have been getting some gardening done... the front flower boxes were getting a little ragged/sparse, so I trimmed back a lot of the alyssum and put in some pansies with a burgundy color scheme. Have also gotten some bulbs (from autumn, yes) into the ground finally... not sure if they'll bloom this spring or not, I think I'm cutting it a little close. We'll see. Oh, and I lost my keys somewhere. I keep expecting them to turn up somewhere in the house or one of the cars, but no luck. In the meantime I've been using the spares, but have finally given up and am getting new copies made. I'm more :( about the fact that I've lost my Santa Cruz carousel ring and my little corset/high heel/purse charms, as those are harder to replace than the keys. Things like that. I'm not entirely sure what all was on my keyring, actually. I'm sure there was some kind of store card thingie, so if they were found in public and turned in, the store would have called me. More evidence that they're just lost somewhere, but can't wait forever to find them.
Other happy things and things to look forward to:
* Planting my paperwhites (from Mike and Shannon)... I do love them, even if they aren't really great at reblooming. They're just so charming.
* Seeing Miss Stasha. I had to cancel our plans, but am now feeling like I'm okay to be social again. Must have best-friend girly goodness soon.
* I have new shoes! I love them. They're just plain and most people probably wouldn't understand my smitten-ness, but I really do adore them. I might get a second/backup pair for when these ones eventually die.
* Going to the snow! We try to go every year sometime in the Jan/Feb area, and I should be able to join in the sledding-type activities now. Jay & Morgan will probably come too, and maybe my mom.
* Have been having a lot of homemade cocoa (no sugar/low carb) made with milk and vanilla and cinnamon lately, and it is really yummeh. Surprisingly, it's even worth the work/dishes. And I noticed the other day that all my cocoa packets have additional fabulous and yummy ideas printed on them! So good things to try, too.
* Weather hasn't been too yucky lately, and there's a nice little pocket park/playground like a block away from the house that I just discovered. So Alex and I will probably start going there a bit to play.
Edit: Oh! Just remembered... Cassie finally had her baby! Last Saturday, around 2 in the morning, via c section. She was looking great when we saw her on Sunday, and the wee little Christopher James mostly slept and wiggled a little, and opened his eyes for a tiny little while, but mostly just looked like the adorable little baby boy he is. Haven't seen them again since they got home from the hospital, but will probably want to visit again soon.
