Update

Ah, the rare and elusive update! These things are practically an endangered species. So, what's been going on?

There was my mom's birthday, which went really well. Nate stayed home with Alex, and I took my mom and Jay and Morgan out to the comedy club, which was a good time. My mom was surprised by how many of the jokes had to do with sex, and I accidentally took Morgan's wallet home with me. They stopped offering fried zucchini on the menu which I find very sad. Really, there just aren't enough fried vegetable offerings in the world. And now I'm really craving tempura. But it was a slightly insane good time.

Then Alex's birthday, which I've at least posted pictures about. What more really needs to be said about that? It went pretty well, and yet again there are people who are possibly slighted because they weren't invited. I swear, I just don't understand that. Ah well, it was a full house as it was, and everyone that didn't get to come will just have to make peace with that. The important people were there. My dad stayed longer and had dinner with us... even though we don't see him often, it's always enjoyable, and I do my best with what I have; it's unlikely we'll ever have a normal father/daughter relationship, but I think that we do have a good connection.

We've been doing a ton of work getting the workshop rebuillt (there will probably be pictures at some point), and so that's been taking up lots of our time (mostly Nate, of course, with some help from me). It's very exciting to see it nearing completion and looking so pretty! Heh, I love projects. Oh, and TV has started again, so in addition to my PBS children's programming (we watch Sesame Street and occasionally others... they've started showing Curious George! I squee), I have new Bones and new House! This makes for a happy Amy. And because I have this odd marketing fetish, I've been watching the shows that come on after them, because, demographics! They're bound to be something I'll like, right?

In Bones: I'm not into the new boss woman. Not in that "love to hate her" way, but in the "I hope she doesn't have many lines so the other characters have more screen time" way. She just doesn't do much for me. But otherwise, yay, Bones! I loves it. The show after it is Justice, which I'm liking quite a bit. Nate, not so much, but he may warm up to it. Lawyer-y goodness! So far I like them all. House was a tiny bit disappointing in the first episode just because there was so little snark, but I knew he'd come through for me, and he has. I have so much love for this show that I'm reading and enjoying gen fic, which is something I never do. Love! Less love is Standoff, which comes on after House. I'm giving the show one more chance, but it's not doing much for me. I like the boss and the SWAT team leader guy, but the main characters haven't caught my interest much. I could really do without the girl completely (who I dislike as a character and feel is not in the right job and gives women a bad name) and the romance between her and the other main character is not gaining it any points with me. So one more shot, and then I'm ditching it if it doesn't snag me with something.

So Saturday was my grandpa's 75th birthday party, which was mostly fantastic. Got to see lots of people who I usually only see once a year (at Christmas) and confirmed gleefully that I am still hosting the ornament exchange this year! And I've discovered that apparently everyone in my family is on myspace, which I've really done a great job of avoiding, but now I think I'm going to have to join just so I can keep track of all of them. So I'll be putting that together after I finish updating. Myspace! ::shivers:: But there was lots of good catching up with relatives and reminiscing about our skewed and unusual childhoods, and it's really starting to hit me more and more that all the cousins I grew up with are really grown ups now! Not just "over eighteen" or dating or stuff like that, but buying houses and such. I bet they have retirement plans! It's scary to think about that, even though OF COURSE they had to be grown ups someday. I guess it's like a sneak peek of when Alex grows up. Yeah, so good to see everybody.

Sunday, off we went for camping! Pictures later! We had a really good time and it was gorgeous, but Alex was having a really hard time sleeping while we were there, and so we ended up coming home late last night instead of this afternoon... it would have been nice to stay longer, but it just wasn't in the cards. Was so good to get away and enjoy a last little bit of summer, though. Will try to post more details when I put the pictures up.
